Check for air leaks and save energy costs

Wasted energy in compressed air is quite common. It is therefore sensible to continuously inspect the company's air, vacuum or gas installations on a frequent basis.

Compressed air is widely used and an effective propellant for many types of machines used in various locations within many industries: car industry, hospital service, laboratories, shipping, heavy industrial engineering plants, etc. Almost 90% of industries use compressed air in some aspect of their daily use/production. One similarity discovered is that throughout all industry wasted energy in compressed air is quite common.

However compressed air (and other gases) are at the same time a very large cost to the company's budget each year.

It is therefore sensible to continuously inspect the company's air, vacuum or gas installations on a frequent basis.

Portable fault locating detectors are ideally suited, especially in noisy environments, to be used in energy conservation, predictive maintenance and proactive maintenance programmes for leak detection and mechanical inspection.

Logis-Tech Associates has recently introduced to the UK a range of ultrasonic devices for listening to leaks in compressed air and vacuum installations, leaks in tanks, etc, and to listen to mechanical noise from for example in ball bearings or other movable parts.

Leaks - a leakage test may prevent more serious and costly problems from occurring or even show that the installation of a newer larger compressor is unnecessary.

The Logis-Tech EP equipment consists of a very sensitive listening detector where a headphone or an authorised hearing protector with loudspeaker can be connected.

The system works by 'listening' at a frequency band that normally is non-audible for humans - from 20kHz and upwards, (ultrasonic).

This is unique, as air leaks generate a lot of ultrasonic.

Audible noises from the surroundings are filtered off so that the device can be ideally used in a noisy environment.

The Logis-Tech EP equipment can also be used with an ultrasonic transmitter that transmits pulsating ultrasonic.

The transmitter is placed inside the item to be examined, which is then closed.

The user can then examine the item from the outside and can easily detect, any leaks.

Air leakage can be defined as consumed air that contributes nothing to production.

In a well-managed system, wasteful air leaks should not exceed 5-10% of net production consumption.

This acceptable leakage still costs the company per year.

Although most engineering and maintenance personnel are aware their operations have air leaks; the biggest problem is they are unable to quantify those air leaks in order to make rational corrective decisions.

This is where a quality compressed air leak-detecting device comes into play.

Since air leaks are a reoccurring problem, it is imperative that plant personnel initiate a regular preventive maintenance program allowing the detection of these wasteful air leaks.

Ultrasonic sensors detect the disturbance caused by turbulent flow, which is produced by a leak, and because they are sound sensitive, they can be applied to all types of fluid systems.

Detecting air or gas leaks in pressurised tanks, vacuums, boilers, tubing, pipe fittings, flanges, seals and gaskets are all possible.

Specific typical industrial systems include: condensers, furnaces, heat exchangers, etc.

The advantage of using these sensors is that they are able to sense a leak in real-time.

During a scan, a user will hear the sound of the leak increase as the sensor passes by the place where it is located.

In the contact, or wave-guide mode, leaks in steam traps and valves are also sensed.

Using permanently mounted sensors, valves can be monitored for both the onset of flow, such as in safety relief valves or for flow disruption.

Mechanical malfunctions - a machine or another propellant loses its effectiveness if or when mechanical malfunctions occur.

Often these mean reduced production or at the worst an unintended and expensive production stop.

It is therefore important to be able to quickly locate the mechanical malfunction or in some cases to make a systematic monitoring of essential machine parts to always be able to make a controlled production stop with all the economical advantages this entails.

Also, in this case, the Logis-Tech EP equipment consists of a detector with a headphone or hearing protector where an electronic internal/external sensor (stethoscope sensor or clip) can be connected.

The sensor is used for listening to mechanical noise and only picks up mechanical low frequency vibrations so the stethoscope can also be used in noisy areas.

Within all mechanical operations: bearings, pumps, motors, gears, gearboxes and compressors, produce some form of 'typical' sound patterns, and a change in these patterns can be detected and analysed.

For eg, the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) in the USA paved the way for ultrasonic bearing inspection by demonstrating that ultrasound monitoring provided the earliest warning of bearing failure.

In addition, conditions such as rubbing and lackof lubrication can also be detected.

The advantage of ultrasonic inspection is the short-wave nature of the signal allows inspectors to easily inspect specific components in operating equipment.

Multi-channel controller takes four sensors

New multi-channel controller saves space by accommodating up to four air pressure sensors for confirmation of vacuum, ejector supply pressure, placement, and leak testing applications.

SMC's new multi-channel controller, saves space by accommodating up to four air pressure sensors from the latest PSE530 range. Applications for these units include confirmation of vacuum, ejector supply pressure, placement, and leak testing. When connected to other SMC sensors (PSE510 and PSE52), the controller will verify hydraulic or liquid pressure, rather than air.

The controller (series PSE200) is multi-functional giving a wide menu choice:- Auto shift ?

allows stable output even when supply pressure changes Auto preset - automatically sets the pressure value.

Auto identification - will automatically identify the pressure range of a connected SMC sensor.

Copy - each channel's information can be copied to another channel.

Display calibration - each channel has an adjustable display.

Anti-chattering - prevents malfunction, due to sudden erroneous pressure changes (response times can be selected at 20, 160 or 640ms).

Channel scan - allows constant monitoring of the displayed pressure value for each channel.

Reset, key lock, and display of peak and bottom pressure values.

Wiring is simple and neat - the optional cable can be supplied with a tool-free press-in connector (a gentle push into the sensor input, on the reverse of the controller, and the lead snaps easily into place!) The connection cable is heavy duty, and halogen free, (ISO 14000 compatible).

In addition, the controller offers low power consumption at 55mA or less, giving energy savings, without compromising the quality of the LCD backlit display.

The pressure sensors (series PSE530) themselves offer a rated (high, vacuum, low, and compound) pressure range of between 0 to 2Mpa (high pressure) and -101 to 101kPa (compound).

The sensor can be supplied with or without sensor cables and connectors, as options.

Standard port size is M5 x 0.8 Sensor body material is stainless steel grade 303, internal enclosure is PPE (polyphenylene oxide), the sensor is silicon, and the o-ring is of NBR (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber).

For verification of line cleaning, washing operations, priming of hydraulic cylinders, or suction of wet work, the series PSE52 should be specified, as it has been designed for hydraulic or liquid pressure.

Plug in subbase valves shorten time to market

Plug in subbase valves deliver advantage to OEMs who are looking to make specification decisions quickly and effectively, thus helping to reduce the all-important time to market.

In order to further enhance and strengthen its range of automation solutions, Norgren, the motion and fluid control specialist, is launching a new range of plug in subbase valves. With flexibility and configurability at the heart of the design, the new innovative VS series delivers competitive advantage to OEMs who are looking to make specification decisions quickly and effectively, thus helping to reduce the all-important time to market. Recognising development time can be costly, Norgren has designed the VS series to offer engineering advantage through the wealth of features including high flow, long life and I/O capabilities.

The new VS series fulfils the requirements of a variety of markets such as packaging, paper and printing, materials handling, machine tools and the automotive industry.

Designed and manufactured at Norgren's Swiss facility, the system utilises proven valve technology to deliver long life and exceptional flow rates through two different spool technologies.

The glandless spool and sleeve valve features high operational figures of 200 million cycles, whilst the soft seal spool valve delivers exceptionally high flow rates.

This gives the customer the flexibility to select the appropriate spool for each application without the need to install a second valve system.

The VS series is also focused on delivering engineering advantage through its endurance and reliability figures.

This focus translates to minimal maintenance for the machine user in the field and, if valves do need replacing, the system allows the user to make a changeover quickly and effectively with minimal interruption.

When it comes to fieldbus options the VS series has been developed to accommodate most of the industry-recognised protocols such as Profibus-DP, DeviceNet, CANopen, Interbus-S, AS-interface and AB RIO.

The subbase of the system integrates the required electronics thus delivering advantage because the valve island size is the same for fieldbus and multipole.

Available in 18mm or 26mm widths, the VS series features 3 different port options (ISOG, NPTF and built-in push-in-fittings) and features a valve interface according to ISO 15407-2.

The VS series has been designed to be extremely robust and durable and is manufactured from the highest quality materials to handle harsh operating environments.

Accommodating two-valve size ranges with flow rates from 550 to 650 l/min (18mm) and 1000 to 1350 l/min (26mm), the VS series features a wide variety of sandwich plate accessories such as pressure regulators, flow controls, single valve shut off plates and intermediate supply and exhaust modules.

With IP65, NEMA 4, CE, ATEX and UL 429 approvals and two supply voltages (24V DC and 115V AC), the VS series is suitable for all markets.

Utilising the Norgren online valve island configurator, the machine builder simply defines a set of parameters such as number of valves needed and flow rate to satisfy individual specification requirements.

Available in any combination from one to 16 valves OEMs can configure a solution to match individual specifications and if the system needs to evolve, once installed, the VS system can be configured in the field to match the changes.

This flexibility delivers advantages to OEMs through minimum machine downtime and reduced modification times.

Compact pneumatic cylinders are much shorter

Compact pneumatic cylinders are purpose designed to provide efficient use of available space and are significantly shorter than conventional ones.

KV has a wide range of cylinders designed to meet every application, and the compact and Clamp series of cylinders is purpose designed to provide efficient use of available space and provide a highly cost-effective solution to the market place. Designed around VDMA body mounting dimensions, the new compact pneumatic cylinders are significantly shorter than conventional cylinders, and ideal for use where space is at a premium. The range is available in bore diameters from 32 to 63mm and each cylinder is supplied complete with magnetic pistons for external electric sensing.

In addition, with an extended cylinder nose incorporating a PTFE lined bearing, increased side loading can be accommodated.

Also designed for installation in confined spaces, KV's new short stroke cylinders provide fast response actuation for clamping, conveying and tool holding applications.

Single acting units are available with non-magnetic piston assemblies, whilst double acting cylinders can be supplied with either magnetic or non-magnetic pistons.

Clamp cylinders have an operating pressure range of 0.5 to 10 bar.

There are eight diameter options ranging from 12 to 63mm, the larger of which are compatible with VDMA 24652 body mounting dimensions.

With hard anodised aluminium bodies, stainless steel piston rods and polyurethane seals, both new series can operate at extreme of temperature.

Modernise air and fluid systems

Modern air and fluid system solutions provide additional benefits in noise reduction, improving working conditions and reducing exposure to high levels of noise pollution in the workplace.

As one of the largest independent distributors of fluid and air solutions in the UK, Thomas Wright/Thorite Group supplies a complete range of products and services to clients who range from one-man operations to blue-chip multi-nationals. Roger explains, 'Because we thoroughly understand compressed air as a medium, we can put together the optimum solution for each situation and Meech Air-Tec products are very often an essential part of that jig-saw.' Compressed air is vital to many manufacturing processes - it has been estimated that its creation accounts for as much as 10% of all industrial electricity used. Meech Air-Tec products are designed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the systems of which they form part.

Not only that, but, in these days of increasing awareness of Health and Safety, Meech Air-Tec products provide additional benefits in noise reduction, improving working conditions and reducing the potentially injurious effects of exposure to high levels of noise pollution in the workplace.

Food manufacture is an area where Thorite has found many applications for Meech Air-Tec products, one example is in the creation of a leading brand of confectionary, where the production process includes the rolling out and trimming of the sweet material prior to being cut into its final shape.

Using Meech Air-Tec air amplifiers the excess trimmings are collected directly from the cutting area, using clean air vacuum extraction, and deposited back into the feeder-hopper so completely eliminating waste from this stage of the process.
