It is estimated that around five million workers are exposed to HAVS, and the introduction in 2005 of the Control of Vibration at Work 2005 regulations requires employers to reduce the risk of prolonged exposure to vibration.

'That means it's not just something employers might like to do,' Lofthouse said, 'it's a requirement, and we believe we can help our customers fulfil it.'

Also, on a conventional emergency stop when at the locked position, because of the internal spring pressure it can tend to move to the normal position if subject to excessive force or shock.

With the XA/XW it works the other way, the energy tends towards the safe off position.

If the contacts happen to be welded, the force applied to the button will always directly open the contact.

A common factor for these activities is the need for hand protection, primarily in the form of rubber gloves.

When contact dermatitis occurs, the first instinct is to blame it on the gloves.

More often than not, however, the reason for the allergic reaction is not contact with one agent but a combination of rubber and another source.

As more information on the dangers of latex allergies is made available, rubber frequently becomes the prime suspect in cases of work-related dermatitis.

In reality, chemicals such as detergents and cleansers, and metals such as nickel or chromium, could be the culprits, as these irritant agents can and do cause contact dermatitis.

These substances can also react with the rubber in gloves, resulting in varying degrees of skin irritation.

In most cases, gloves can prevent reactions.

But in certain situations they can aggravate a skin condition.

Soap or skin cleansers can also cause contact dermatitis.

Skin cleansers designed for and labeled as 'heavy-duty cleansers' or 'waterless hand cleansers' contain solvents and abrasives.

Meanwhile, liquid soaps contain preservatives.

Reactions can occur if these agents are not fully rinsed off, leaving residues on the skin.

Wearing gloves, or occlusion of the hands, after applying soaps and cleansers can also trap the residues, resulting in the skin being further exposed to the irritant solvents and preservatives.

Meanwhile, chromate sensitization - resulting from exposure to wet cement - has long been known to cause contact dermatitis among construction workers.

Wearing gloves when handling wet cement can help prevent the condition.

The two allergic reactions discussed above are both irritant contact dermatitis cases, where the allergy itself is not caused by the glove material used but from agents such as chemicals or frequent contact with water.

On the other hand, many healthcare workers are at risk of developing natural rubber latex allergy as a result of the gloves they wear or come into contact with.

In fact, US statistics suggest that between five and 20 per cent of healthcare workers have developed a latex allergy of some sort, often due to repeated exposure.

Latex-related allergy is also one of the most common causes of disability among healthcare professionals.

Allergic reactions to natural latex rubber can occur in varying degrees of severity, ranging from a mildly irritating rash to completely debilitating anaphylactic shock.

There are at least three causes of allergic reactions: natural rubber proteins, glove powder and rubber accelerators.

At first, natural rubber proteins can cause contact dermatitis which may progress with no warning into a Type I allergic reaction (immediate hypersensitivity).

This is a group of disorders in which a rash appears immediately after exposure and fades away within minutes to hours.

The reaction may immediately progress to hives and may spread to other parts of the body especially the face with edema, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, laryngeal edema, difficulty breathing, tachycardia and bronchospasm.

The reaction can be life-threatening.

In fact, Latex allergy is listed along with insect stings, medications, shellfish and peanuts as one of the top five causes of life-threatening anaphylaxis.

If the glove is powdered, the proteins which migrate to the surface of the glove material during curing become adhered to the glove powder.

The glove powder, normally cornstarch, with the Latex proteins attached can easily become airborne and may then be inhaled.

This will make the situation worse and increase the risk of suffering anaphylaxis.

Meanwhile, rubber accelerators are chemicals used to speed up the manufacturing process of rubber.

These chemical ingredients are present in almost every elastomeric or unsupported glove made.

In particular, the accelerators thiurams, carbamates and benzothiazoles can cause allergic contact dermatitis (Type IV allergic reaction - Delayed hypersensitivity).

This type of dermatitis is an itchy skin condition caused by an allergic reaction to a material - for example, natural rubber and nitrile gloves - after chronic skin exposure.

This allergic reaction arises a few hours after exposure and only affects the area the glove material touched.

There are a number of ways to avoid the risk of allergic reactions from gloves.

These include: - Don't blame an allergic reaction on the gloves alone; Search for the true culprit.

- Protect yourself with gloves when you are working with irritants - for example, water, chemicals, metal process fluids, cement, hairdressers' products, detergents, food stuffs, epoxy resins, etc; - and choose powder-free and accelerator-free nitrile gloves instead of natural rubber gloves.

Called Touch Control, it is manufactured by German sensor and instrument manufacturer, Unidor, and is available through sole UK agent, Bruderer UK, Luton. The control is easy to use, having no keys, buttons or switches - just a touch screen.

It is fed with signals from non-contact, oil-resistant, eddy current sensors strategically located around the working area of a stamping or forming press.

Any out-of-tolerance measurement stops production automatically.

Up to eight analogue channels are measured to a positional resolution of +/- 1 micron, each channel being set up and monitored for upper and lower limits, and curve envelope.

Results are displayed numerically and graphically on the screen, either in absolute values or as deviations.

There is sufficient memory for storing the parameters of 300 die set-ups.

The exact positions of the punch, stripper plate and die may be monitored, enabling double sheets or slugs to be detected, so eliminating scrap and the risk of broken tooling.

Any out-of-parallel movement can also be identified, which if not due to slug build-up may indicate worn or broken stripper springs.

Bottom dead centre of the ram can be measured precisely and adjustments made at the control to ensure correct closure of the punch and die, extending the life of the tool.

This is crucial for accurate coining, which can be affected by variation in operating speed, temperature change or a blocked scrap chute.

Monitoring of press force is also possible.

The system is especially suitable for coil-fed presses, as one of the Touch Control's functions is precise optical measurement of the strip as it is fed through the tool.

In the case of high-speed presses, including those produced by Bruderer's Swiss parent company, the Unidor control supports operation at up to 1,500 strokes per minute (spm).

Finally, dynamic, static or multiple stroke monitoring including flank counting can be selected, for which purpose four digital PNP/NPN inputs are provided.

Features include its compact size and the coded NC contact that guarantees a high level of safety, which, when used with an appropriate safety-monitoring module such as Schmersal's AES series, meets the requirements of Control Category 4 to EN 954-1 or SIL Level 3 to IEC 61508. It is also suitable for applications of PDF class M to EN 60204-1.

Users can also choose between 1 NO / 1 NC and 2 NC contacts and the signalling contact can be NO or NC.

The BNS 260 also features an optional LED, which signals the switching condition, and for applications where the sensor must be fitted in a 90deg rotated position, a special actuator version with lateral active surface is available.

Automotive plant required a lightweight guarding system that was flexible - allowing maintenance and future modifications - while robust enough to offer a high degree of personnel safety.

The building which houses the T5 model platform for Land Rover's Discovery 3 and the Range Rover Sport contains 260 ABB robots and is 75% automated. The Manufacturing Engineering team at Land Rover required a guarding system that was lightweight and flexible (to facilitate maintenance and any future modifications) while still being robust enough to offer a high degree of safety for personnel. Bosch Rexroth's EcoSafe system meets the most stringent guarding legislation (EN292, 294 and 811) and for the Manufacturing Engineering teams' requirements, it meant that their system conformed to the Machinery Directive.

* Aluminium replaces steel - one of the major advantages of the EcoSafe protective barrier system is that it is made from aluminium and its anodised surfaces offer the clean finish preferred in modern manufacturing environments.

When compared with heavy, cumbersome and corrosion-prone 'traditional' steel guarding, the system has numerous benefits.

EcoSafe's modular, durable, bolt-together design eliminates the need for welding, painting, special tooling and skilled labour.

* Integration - hugely important to Land Rover was the ease with which the EcoSafe system could be integrated with other equipment.

Access is obviously a major issue in machine guarding: if a system is too complicated or unwieldy then productivity can be affected and employees may look for an opportunity to 'bypass' the safety fencing.

If access can be gained too readily then there is the possibility of an employee venturing too close to a robot which has not finished its cycle.

There is a delicate balance to be struck.

This balance exists at Land Rover in the form of an electronic interlocked trapped key gate system incorporating technology from Fortress Interlocks.

Other products which the fence line must integrate with are light guards, light scanners and signal towers.

Land Rover's Manufacturing Engineering team were quick to point out that retrofitting these devices was simplicity itself due to the design of the EcoSafe product.

Installing a signal tower for example simply requires brackets being fitted into the grooves on the profiles, a process which with a traditional steel guarding system would have required a great deal of time, effort and equipment.

With the specification of the EcoSafe product, Land Rover was looking for a lightweight, flexible, affordable guarding system provided by a supplier that had the infrastructure to support the project through all of its various phases.

Pilz Automation Technology's new PSENopt range of safety light barriers is being launched with the introduction of new standard light curtains that are available from stock on short delivery times (typically ten days or less). These units are all Type 4 light curtains in accordance with EN/IEC 61496-1 and -2, with models available for finger and hand detection in safety-related control circuits conforming to the requirements of Category 2 or 4 of EN 954-1. Light curtains for finger detection are offered with protected field heights ranging from 150mm to 1200mm, and units for hand detection are offered with protected field heights of 150mm to 1650mm.

Operating ranges are 0.2m to 6m and 0.2m to 15m for the finger and hand detection light curtains, respectively.

Machine builders, system integrators and end users can therefore now source virtually all of their machinery safety products from a single trusted supplier. Because the switch and its actuator are installed directly on the PSEN b1 bolt assembly, minor positional errors are catered for by the sliding mechanical bolt action; consequently there is no undue wear and tear on the mechanical switch actuator and no problem with misalignment of the coded non-contact switch/actuator.

Furthermore, the PSENbolt assembly is supplied complete with an integral door handle, which offers significant potential savings compared with the total cost of specifying, purchasing and installing a separate bolt and door handle.

The PSENbolt assembly can be used with either the PSEN me1 or the PSEN me1.1 solenoid-interlocked mechanical switches with a holding force of 1500N that prevents the guard door from being opened until the machinery is safe to access.

These PSEN me1 switches feature two safety contacts.

Operating voltage for the PSEN me1 switches is 24V AC/DC; the PSEN me1.1 operates with 24V DC or 24/110/230V AC.

The switches are suitable for use in safety-related control systems meeting the requirements of EN 954-1 Category 2 or 3 (or 4, if two switches are used in a redundant configuration), and they are sealed to IP67.

Pilz offers three types of coded non-contact PSENcode switch, all with a fast 20ms response time: the coded model (PSEN cs1.1p) operates with any compatible Pilz actuator; the fully coded model (PSEN cs2.1p) has a facility to teach-in a new actuator in the event of loss or damage (restricted to eight times to reduce the risk of tampering); and the uniquely coded model (PSEN cs2.2p) can only ever be used in conjunction with the actuator with which it is supplied.

Virtually impossible to defeat, this last switch provides an exceptional level of integrity.

All variants are suitable for applications conforming to the requirements of EN 954-1 Category 4, and all are sealed to IP67.

For additional security, the PSENbolt can be fitted with a padlock so that the safety gate cannot be closed inadvertently while someone is still working inside the machine guard.

Although it is all but identical to IEC 62061, BS EN 62061 (Safety of machinery, Functional safety of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems) is now harmonised to the Machinery Directive, which makes a subtle but important difference. This article explains the implications for machine builders and those modifying machinery, and looks in detail at what the standard contains. While there is a fair chance that you might have read something about IEC 62061 in the last year or two, it is almost certain that you will not have seen anything about BS EN 62061:2005 (Safety of machinery, Functional safety of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems).

While the two standards' numbers, names and texts are the same, there is a subtle difference that machine builders - and those modifying machinery - should be aware of.

It is widely appreciated today that new machinery for placing on the market in the European Union, and machinery that has been modified, needs to be CE marked.

The key legal requirement for this is that the machinery must meet the essential health and safety requirements (EHSRs) of the Machinery Directive.

Compliance with harmonised standards (ie Euronorms, or standards prefixed with EN) is not a legal requirement, but harmonised standards are considered to be 'best advice' documents and therefore offer machine builders an 'approved route' to meeting the EHSRs.

If machinery is not constructed in accordance with the harmonised standards, it may be difficult (though not impossible) to demonstrate compliance with the EHSRs, should the need arise.

IEC 62061 was published in early 2005 and some machine builders started working with it almost immediately.

However, in January 2006, the standard was harmonised as EN 62061 (and BS EN 62061 in the UK), with the result that machine builders are now strongly encouraged to comply with its requirements where appropriate.

* Oppurtunity - however, instead of it being viewed as a burden, this standard should be seen as a golden opportunity, as it means machine builders can now be more confident that their machines will meet the EHSRs of the Machinery Directive, as BS EN 954-1 (the standard to which they probably worked previously) has no advice to offer when programmable or software-configurable are used within safety-related electrical control systems, other than to say that single-channel programmable systems cannot be used above category B.

BS EN 62061 is a sector standard (or 'daughter' standard) to the seven-part standard IEC/EN 61508, 'Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems', written specifically for the machinery sector.

It therefore takes a quantitative risk-based approach similar to that found in EN 61508, which requires rather more work than the qualitative 'risk graph' of EN 954-1.

However, it can also be argued that the requirement for a more methodical approach will lead to machinery being built with better, more predictable performance, greater reliability and availability, and capable of delivering an improved return on investment.

In the event of a machine failure or a requirement to modify or upgrade, the improved documentation will also be highly beneficial.

BS EN 62061 is primarily aimed at developers and manufacturers of complex plant and machinery utilising programmable controllers and fieldbus networks for safety functions, plus developers of relevant application software and users of complex programmable safety systems that have been developed in accordance with EN 61508.

* Management of functional safety - one of the most important clauses in EN 62061 is clause 4, the management of functional safety, which calls for a functional safety plan.

This should describe a policy and strategy for fulfilling the functional safety requirements, as well as identifying persons, departments and other resources that are responsible for carrying out and reviewing each of the activities.

Procedures should be produced and resources provided to record and maintain the information.

Verification and validation plans should also be established.

It must be stressed that all of this requires adequate competence if it is to be completed correctly.

Clause 5, Requirements for the specification of Safety Related Control Functions (SRCFs), explains how the functional requirements specification and safety integrity requirements for each SRCF should be compiled to create a safety requirements specification (SRS).

Furthermore, the three safety integrity levels (SIL 1, SIL 2 and SIL 3) require that the probability of dangerous failures per hour (PFHd) must fall between certain target values as follows.

SIL 1 - =10-6 to <10-5 (or 1 failure in 100,000h).

SIL 2 - =10-7 to <10-6 (or 1 failure in 1,000,000h).

SIL 3 - =10-8 to <10-7 (or 1 failure in 10,000,000h).

Of course the next step in the process is to design the SRECS, which is covered in Clause 6, Design and Integration of the safety related electrical control system (SRECS).

This clause specifies the requirements for the selection or design of the SRECS to meet the functional and safety integrity requirements specified in the safety requirements specification (SRS).

* Function blocks - Clause 6 gives examples of how the SRECS should be broken down into function blocks that are then detailed in terms of their structure, safety requirements and inputs and outputs.

These function blocks are then allocated to subsystems that make up the complete SRECS.

Also covered in Clause 6 are the identification of the Probability of Dangerous failures (PFHd), estimation of Safe Failure Fractions (SSF), Common Cause Failures (CCF) and diagnostic functions.

Both hardware and software design are discussed, plus development, implementation and testing.

Documentation is a very important aspect of EN 62061.

As well as the documentation that will generated as part of the design process, Clause 7, Information for use of the Safety Related Electrical Control System (SRECS), explains what information relating to the SRECS should be provided to the user to enable procedures to be developed to ensure the system safety functions are maintained during the use and maintenance aspects of the machine.

Further information is also contained in Clause 10, Documentation.

It has already been mentioned that a validation plan is required, and the validation process requirements are described in Clause 8, Validation of the SRECS.

This details how the process should be applied - which depends on the complexity of the SRECS and the assigned SIL.

During installation and commissioning it is often the case that modifications will be found to be necessary.

BS EN 62061 Clause 9, Modification, details the procedure to adopt when modifications are required during the design integration and validation phases of the project.

Modifications must be carried out correctly documented, with adequate configuration management procedures and documentation; the process must be controlled including action plans.

In terms of a design procedure, BS EN 62061 gives a six-stage process: identify the danger zones on the machine; define the risk parameters Se, Fr, Pr, Av (in accordance with Annex A); identify the required safety integrity level (SIL) (in accordance with Annex A); design and implement the necessary safety functions; determine the SILs (by establishing the residual error probability (PFH) and the Safe Failure Fraction (SFF)); and compare the achieved SIL with the required SIL.

The risk parameters are as follows: Se (severity of harm); Fr (frequency and exposure time to the hazard); Pr (probability of occurrence of hazardous event); and Av (possibility to avoid or limit the harm).

Because the standard takes a quantitative approach, all of these parameters can be quantified.

For example, the Severity of harm (Se) carries 4 points for an irreversible injury (death, loss of eye or arm), down to 1 point for a reversible injury that requires on-site first aid.

Similarly points are scored for the other risk parameters, with the probability of occurrence of harm (Cl) being the sum of the points scored for Fr + Pr + Av.

The standard contains a look-up table that shows what SIL is required for a given combination of Se and Cl.

It will be appreciated that various factors can affect the residual error probability (PFH), as follows: architecture of control system; failure/error rate of the individual components; quality of error management (diagnostic coverage); test interval; inspection interval or service life; and common cause failures.

All of these are covered in detail within BS EN 62061, but it is important to note that the required calculations - such as for the failure rate - require data to be collected from suppliers for specific components or, alternatively, generic data may be used.

BS EN 62061 gives scores that can be applied to various common cause failures to give an estimation of the common cause factor (Beta - expressed as a percentage).

If you are not familiar with some of the terminology introduced here, it probably all sounds complicated.

And when you see the calculations written down, these can also appear daunting at first sight.

But the standard and its annexes are well written and include examples, so users will most likely get to grips with the principles, terminology and calculations relatively quickly.

Nevertheless, given the potential seriousness of getting any of the procedure wrong - such as an injury to an operative - it is vital to seek assistance from an expert in the event of any difficulty being encountered.

Finally, it should be noted that BS EN 954-1 may soon be replaced by a new BS EN 13849-1 (currently available as pr EN ISO 13849-1), which also uses a quantitative approach to risk assessment and calculations of PFH (residual error probability), though the new standard refers to performance levels rather than the SILs of BS EN 62061.

However, because the two standards cover similar ground, it is likely that the next step in the standards development process would be to move towards combining these into one.

In order to achieve this Approval, the instrument had to undergo extensive tests both in the field and in the laboratory. Health and safety regulations have always been a 'minefield', writes Jim McCartney, and as rules are revised, it's hardly surprising that UK manufacturers are falling foul of them.

Health and safety regulations have always been a 'minefield', even for the savviest of organisations. And as rules are revised or changed, it's hardly surprising that manufacturers are falling foul of them either through lack of awareness or, in some cases, complacence. When anecdotal information indicated that this issue was particularly acute for small businesses, we commissioned research to explore the extent to which manufacturers were aware of health and safety legislation and its potential impact on their business.

The findings were fascinating and enabled us to identify where the needs for health and safety training might lie and to develop a clear understanding of employer and employee attitudes to health and safety in the UK.

Worryingly, we found that 80% of employees surveyed believed that up to a quarter (24%) of accidents in the workplace went unreported to line managers.

A further 14% of workers were not entirely confident that their workplace was safe, indicating a knowledge and communications gap in the industry.

But employees themselves could be part of the problem.

Given that nine in ten manufacturers surveyed claimed to take their HSE duties seriously, their efforts seemed to be hampered by employees who chose to turn a blind eye to real and potential accidents rather than report them.

This could be down to complacence, lack of understanding or simply not wanting to become involved.

However, all are breaches of health and safety regulations.

Yet ignoring health and safety at work is not a wise option for manufacturing businesses as some have discovered at their peril, suffering costly fines, imprisonment or the closure of their business.

The average fine for an HSE conviction in 2004-2005 was GBP 8,368, which many employers admit could damage their ability to trade.

Employers can even be prosecuted if an accident has not occurred.

In March 2005, Berkshire-based Bracknell Fireworks was fined GBP 28,000 by the Health and Safety Executive when inspectors found boxes of damaged fireworks leaking explosive material.

But this isn't the full extent of the issue - the onus on companies is set to increase if the proposed Corporate Manslaughter Bill is passed.

This will hold companies responsible if it is proved that fatalities have occurred on site as a result of gross negligence on the part of senior managers.

Our research findings found that almost half of employers surveyed had never heard of the proposed bill.

It isn't all doom and gloom - improved health and safety practices can pay dividends.

Enhancing workforce training and promoting a culture of continuous learning improves employee effectiveness and potentially the company's performance rates and standing in the industry.

At same time, employees who are continually trained and developed should become more motivated and confident in their job role, resulting in a reduction in staff turnover and an increase in the employee's faith in their safety at work.

And training needn't cost the earth.

As health and safety is such a priority in the UK, the cost of health and safety training is covered by the Learning and skills council (LSC) as part of its national 'Train to Gain' initiative to upskill the UK workforce.

In fact, addressing health and safety issues could even generate savings for businesses.

City and Guilds has joined up with Premier Line Insurance to give employers a 10% discount on their insurance if they enrol 15% of their workforce onto the new City and Guilds level 2 Certificate in 'Manufacturing Working Practices'.

The qualification also covers the HSE legal requirement to provide health and safety training for staff.

It's encouraging that small manufacturing businesses are already taking steps to prevent health and safety breaches by offering training to their staff, but there is always room for improvement.

Just a few hours each week could not only cover the legal obligation to offer health and safety training at work, but also improve workforce morale, confidence and productivity, A skills and knowledge audit amongst staff can easily identify the gaps in health and safety knowledge across the workforce, allowing employers to match training needs against the most appropriate courses and local training providers.

They can then prioritise training gaps and start upskilling staff for the benefit of their business.

A particleboard factory has used consultants to undertake a complete plant assessment to ensure compliance with PUWER 98 and detailed risk assessments on specific machines.

Norbord's South Molton particleboard factory has used consultants from Pilz Automation Technology to undertake a complete Plant Assessment to ensure compliance with PUWER 98. Following on from that, the consultants have also performed detailed risk assessments on specific machines, and conducted tests to establish the correct position of safety light curtains relative to hazardous machinery. Norbord is the UK's leading manufacturer of wood-based panel products, with a substantial particleboard facility at South Molton, Devon.

The company has been working closely with the Consultancy Division of Pilz Automation Technology to undertake an extensive assessment of the South Molton plant's machinery safety, followed by more detailed investigations and some remedial work.

Initially Norbord's own engineers had surveyed the plant and identified areas where they suspected equipment might not fully meet the requirements of PUWER 98 (the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations).

Norbord has used Pilz products - mainly safety relays - on its machinery for many years, and has grown to trust the advice given by Pilz.

Consequently the Norbord engineers readily accepted the recommendation for additional work and asked for Pilz consultants to undertake a complete Plant Assessment, giving an initial high-level overview of the issues on site.

A report was produced that highlighted items of equipment that needed attention, and ranked them, on a risk basis, so that Norbord could formulate an action plan.

Justin Smyth, the senior project engineer at Norbord, was very pleased with the consultants' report: 'In contrast with what we have received historically, the Pilz report was clear, concise and user-friendly.

It had just the right level of technical detail so that we could see exactly what subsections of the standards the equipment was failing to meet, and the report told us what we needed to do to rectify the situation.' On the strength of that first report, Pilz has continued working with Norbord on an ongoing basis.

One piece of work was a detailed assessment of a second-hand edge bander, and others have involved more detailed risk assessments of equipment identified as needing attention.

There is a wide range of work equipment and automation in use at Norbord, with EN 954-1 risk categories of 1, 2 and 3.

Areas of concern highlighted by Pilz have covered, for example, machinery guarding and compliant electrical interlocking.

One particular machine on which Norbord requested assistance from Pilz was being fitted with a safety light curtain.

Norbord had estimated a stop time and then worked out how far from the hazardous machinery to install the light curtain in accordance with the requirements of BS EN 999:1999 (Safety of machinery, The positioning of protective equipment in respect of approach speeds of parts of the human body).

Unfortunately this location for the light curtain was so far away that it would have been unworkable.

Pilz came on site with specialist equipment for measuring the actual stop performance of the machinery, and this showed that the time from the moment the light curtain was breached to the point at which the machinery became stationary was around 500ms.

Using this figure to calculate the safety distance enabled the light curtains to be positioned significantly closer to the machinery, which made the installation feasible.

Smyth concluded: 'Because we have limited experience in such a specialist field, it is very helpful to have the consultants readily available.

It also means that we can focus on our key strengths and ensuring production is achieved on schedule - while remaining fully confident that machinery safety is being properly attended to.

Most of all, though, we like the Pilz reports that tell us exactly what we need to know and what we need to do.

As UK government ministers consider a zero tolerance policy towards motorists who take drugs and drive, there is a growing awareness amongst employers that the misuse of alcohol and drugs at work can be a very serious hazard to users as well as their colleagues. As a result, more and more organisations are implementing a drugs and alcohol policy to guard against the consequences of misuse, but what defines misuse? Grendonstar, consultants specialising in the provision of drugs and alcohol misuse policies, has helped many blue chip companies to create a safer working environment whilst reducing the costs to their business that result from substance misuse.

In essence, Grendonstar defines misuse as the inability to carry out a job safely and accurately.

They are also three times more likely to have sick leave, five times more likely to claim compensation, can be 33% less productive and 10 times more likely to be late.

To help combat these effects, more and more organisations are now introducing welfare based substance misuse policies as part of an ongoing health and safety initiative.

Policies of this kind should be designed to combine staff welfare and employee welfare issues with the need to meet current health and safety legislation.

They should be positive in their approach and both educate and motivate staff whilst providing invaluable assistance to management.

The safety of all employees is obviously paramount and it is essential that employers exercise their duty of care.

The introduction of a policy to protect against misuse of alcohol and drugs in the workplace may well be the answer, but employers must be very careful.

The second Acoustic Safety Conference, which takes place at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow on November 27-28, will also see the first keynote speech of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) President Lisa Fowlie since taking the position earlier this month. Lisa will echo concerns raised in Parliament yesterday by the Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South, Mike Hancock, and call for action to find a solution to the acoustic shock problem.

Lisa said: 'Acoustic shock is a pressing health and safety issue.

More research is badly needed to help find ways of controlling it and it is only by working in cooperation with call centres, health experts and health and safety bodies that we'll achieve this.

'I'm alarmed that incidents of acoustic shock, a sudden and unexpected noise that can be received through headphones or an earpiece, are on the increase.

It is something employers need to be aware of, because it's not a cheap business.

'So far, acoustic shock has led to GBP2.5 million being paid out in compensation to 700 people.

That's money that would be better spent elsewhere, and given that the number of cases of acoustic shock could rise in coming years, we need to act now to preserve people's health and to save money.' Around 300 further known cases are also pending and there are believed to be many more people who have experienced acoustic shock but do not realise it.

Over 900,000 people are employed in the call centre industry across the UK.

In a debate in Parliament yesterday (22 November), Mr Hancock highlighted concerns over what government action is being taken on acoustic shock, by asking John Hutton MP, the Secretary State of Work and Pensions, questions on the issue.

This included what equipment is installed to protect his department's call centre workers from acoustic shock and the number of incidents reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The Acoustic Safety Conference will be attended by professionals and managers working in call centre environments, and by health and safety advisers to call centre operators.

Safety controller is more cost-effective than PLC

Easy system configuration or modification makes a safety controller more cost-effective that a traditional safety PLC for medium-complexity machines.

Customers purchasing the PNOZmulti appreciate the way in which only one software licence has to be purchased and used to configure any number of PNOZmulti safety controllers.

However, the pace of development at Pilz has been so great that numerous customers purchased a version 2, 3 or 4 Configurator licence when they started using version 2, 3 or 4 PNOZmulti firmware, yet those customers are now using the same Configurator on version 5 PNOZmulti units they have recently purchased for new machines.

By downloading the new message sets from the Pilz website, these users will be able to connect a laptop PC to the PNOZmulti to interrogate the error stacks and, with the new message sets installed on the PC with the version 2, 3 or 4 Configurator, they can interpret the diagnostic information.

This will save time during both commissioning and troubleshooting.

Announcement expands adoption of EtherNet/IP in new markets and applications.

ODVA has announced that EtherNet/IP has been adopted by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of the People's Republic of China as a machinery industry standard for the People's Republic of China. This adoption will spur continued growth of this open industrial network's installed base - already exceeding 1 million nodes worldwide, and a projected growth in the double digit rates. EtherNet/IP is one of the most widely accepted network standards in the industrial arena, including approval from such organisations as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the corresponding European standards.

'This action, by one the world's leading technology countries, affirms the confidence that both industry and governments have placed in this proven network technology,' said Katherine Voss, executive director of ODVA.

'EtherNet/IP is a future-proof solution for automation applications'.

The Chinese economy is world's fourth largest in terms of gross domestic product, and is growing at more than 9 percent per year.

Nearly every major industry has a presence in China today.

The production growth rate across these industries currently averages around 29 percent per year.

ODVA's membership includes numerous multi-national companies with significant and expanding operations in China including Cisco Systems, Eaton Electrical, Omron and Rockwell Automation.

'Industry in China has expressed strong interest in EtherNet/IP for many automation applications,' states Cai Zhongyong, manager of ODVA activities in China.

EtherNet/IP is one of the network technologies that comprise the family of networks built on the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP).

The machinery industry standard for EtherNet/IP in China is recognised under the Chinese standard JB/T 10308.2-2006: Digital data communication for measurement and control - Fieldbus for use in industrial control systems.

ControlNet, another member of the family of CIP Networks, was also approved by the NDRC as a part of the China machinery industry standard.

These two open networking technologies join DeviceNet, the first member of the family of CIP Networks to obtain approval as a standard in China, when the devicenet technology was made part of the first Chinese national standard to encompass fieldbus technology - GB/T 18858: 'Low Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear Controller-Device Interface'.

'Standard unmodified Ethernet and Internet technologies will play a critical role in achieving continuous productivity improvement in automation applications and for integrating those applications with the enterprise,' said Voss.

'Approval of EtherNet/IP as an industry standard by the People's Republic of China will provide vendors and users with the assurance that an investment in EtherNet/IP will provide positive returns in today's global economy'.
